![]() ![]() As a 10 year old, I had a Porsche Turbo poster on my wall. Well, it’s the car that started my love affair with Porsche. What made you choose this car specifically? My buddy Marty had worked on the car for the prior two owners over the past 25 years. I acquired the car a little over 10 years ago, when prices were low and few people cared about early Turbos. It’s been repainted a few times, has lots of character, patina, and 113,000 miles. It’s a life long LA car and I’m the fourth owner. In fact, it’s the first American Turbo sold in the USA, originally delivered to Bob Smith Porsche in Hollywood. Its a 1976 930 Turbo Carrera three-liter single turbo. The vintage, air-cooled super car stands as one of the most sought after Porsches of all time, ironically for its dangerous, violent, fear-inducing acceleration that ultimately bestowed upon it its nickname: “The Widowmaker.” The 930 was the first generation to be “Turbo”-ed in the sense that they were the pinnacle of Porsche power in a flat-six engine, whereas now all flat-six Porsche gas motors are force induced – they are all turbo Porsches, but this was the first Porsche Turbo. So what kind of car would stand out for a car collector like Magnus Walker? His 1976 Porsche 911 Turbo 930, according to the man himself. Alongside his veritable fleet of sports cars, his work with Hagerty on The Big Thing has become a textbook of sorts for understanding automotive holy grails and collectibles. His image of the “Urban Outlaw” quite literally cemented the vintage look that everyone wants to replicate but few can – the rough, rugged, driven Porsche that stands out in a sea of boring. His passion for petrol eventually transitioned his persona and career to automotive, becoming the de facto figure for car culture, enthusiasm, modification, collection and, most importantly, the drive. From Porsches and Ferraris to classic American muscle and Italian supercars, Magnus has lent his vision and know-how to all of them.īorn in the United Kingdom and moved to the States back in the 80s, Magnus got his start with clothing, having founded the clothing brand Serious and styled for Hollywood’s elite. You bought a microSD card and you’re happy that you’ll now have way more space. Picture this: you have a phone with a small storage capacity, of 8GB, let’s say. Because yes, this is can be either an app developer or manufacturer-related issue. These are isolated cases, though.Īnd this can be really frustrating and make you say a lot of not-so-nice-words about the phone and the folks who made it like this. On older versions of Android, the “move to SD card” option is actually greyed out !Īs a side note, some people were saying – initially – that the SD card is working fine, the device just doesn’t choose to save it. However, you should know that some apps can’t be moved to the microSD card, while some phones won’t let you move any app at all. ES File Explorer is by far one of the most popular choices for this, while AppMgr III also does a great job. Let’s not forget about the dedicated apps for this as well. Just make sure you leave those system files alone! And the moving process is actually pretty easy since you just drag and drop items from one side to another. You will see both the internal storage and SD card as separate storage units. Just connect the phone to it via USB, then open a window and look through the content. Depending on the size of the app, it can take from a few seconds to a few minutes.Īnother quick way of doing this is to use a PC or a Mac. Simply press on it and the transferring process will begin. Here, you can choose the app you want to move by tapping on it and you will get a few options, including the “Move to SD card” button. Revenue and attendance at his theaters was virtually flat last year, he said, despite a 6% drop in admissions for the industry in the United States and Canada. Maya Cinemas declined to disclose its finances, but Esparza said the company is profitable. Though Maya offers cushy amenities such as reclining seats and large-format screens, the company eschews increasingly trendy luxury perks, such as in-seat dining. Regular adult tickets at Delano’s new theater will cost $9 each, which is less than the upscale cinemas in major cities such as Los Angeles, Esparza said. It seems like you can make a decent return in certain markets.” “The theaters just need to be scaled appropriately for the audience…. “It’s an interesting approach for a theater chain,” Handler said. Construction of the new Delano theater, part of a larger development by El Monte-based real estate company YK America Group, was financed by Chase Bank, he said.ĭespite the challenges, Eric Handler, an analyst at MKM Partners who follows the theater business, said Maya Cinemas could succeed by catering to a niche and keeping tickets affordable. The first construction loans for his theaters came from Far East National Bank, a Chinatown-based lender recently acquired by Cathay Bank. My projects cost $25 to $30 million each.” “I’m not doing little tiny projects,” Esparza said. That hesitation only magnified after the last recession, when commercial lending dried up. He chalks up his early struggles to the difficulty of persuading lenders to believe in him, and a longtime reluctance by financial institutions to back major developments in working-class communities. He is also working on opening a theater in Compton, but the project faces challenges, he said, because of limited land available for parking. He now estimates Maya Cinemas’ circuit will include 10 theaters within the next two years, including locations in Phoenix and Las Vegas. In a 2010 interview, he told The Times he expected to eventually open 40 locations with a total of 500 screens around the country. Maya has struggled to expand as fast as Esparza hoped after he opened his first theater in Salinas in 2005. Johnson sold his theater chain in 2004, and the Baldwin Hills theater was closed, renovated and reopened as a Rave Cinemas. Former Los Angeles Lakers star Earvin “Magic” Johnson advocated for more entertainment options in largely black communities, opening the Magic Johnson Crenshaw 15 in Baldwin Hills in the mid-1990s. “It’s a community that really goes to movies.”Įsparza is not the first person to try to build a business putting theaters in locations neglected by the major chains. “The market is underserved, and it’s the market that contributes more than any other to the bottom line of Hollywood,” Pozo said. Santiago Pozo, founder of the Los Angeles-based, Latino-focused marketing firm Arenas Entertainment, said Esparza’s plans make sense. (The MPAA defines frequent moviegoers as people who go to the cinema once a month or more.) Latinos accounted for 24% of frequent moviegoers in 2017, though they represented 18% of the total population, according to a recent report by the Motion Picture Assn. ![]() And Maya’s expansion to date has fallen far short of Esparza’s initial goals.īut Esparza says he can succeed because his target audience has a voracious appetite for movies.
