![]() ![]() After using it for just a few weeks, I have already come up with several dozen expansions that I now regularly use. With just a few lines you can define a wide range of custom expansions. What I really love about this interface is it’s simplicity. Now anytime I type :test, the text will expand to Hello World!. # Simple text replacement - trigger : ":test" replace : "Hello World!" You can find it’s location with this in the terminal: To set a text expansion, all you have to do is edit the default.yml file. It’s really simple to get it up and running – check it out. ![]() because it’s all there in the espanso documentation. Note: I’m skipping a lot of details about installation, etc. In fact, I have become such a fan of espanso that I decided to sit down and write a whole post highlighting some of the ways I use it. ![]() So far, it has integrated quite nicely into my day-to-day workflow. More than anything, I started (and kept) using espanso because I found it to be remarkably simple to use and easy to customize. Of course if you’d like to support the project you can donate here. But I prefer to use open source software whenever possible (the espanso source code is on GitHub), and especially when using software that tracks the text you type (imagine how easy it would be to grab passwords with this type of software). There are lots of these programs out there, such as Typinator, or the creatively-named “ textexpander” (macOS even has a build-in expander). Text expander programs “expand” short text “triggers” into longer / more complex strings of text, like this: With on-the-fly corrections to words you may misspell often, reduce the time spent editing and never spell that word wrong again (well, on a Mac, at least).I recently discovered a wonderfully useful little program called espanso – a “text expander” that I now use on a daily basis. Because you can define snippets of any length you can take a sentence or two that would cause you to type 25 characters and reduce it to 2 characters. Typinator is a solid productivity booster. This allows you to re-use expansions or customize them slightly on a per-application basis (i.e., using +mysig in a word processor may expand to an image of your signature whereas in email or a plain-text editor it may expand to a text representation of your name). So if HTML snippets should only be expanded in TextMate or any other text or HTML editor, it can be defined so that <<tt does not expand in Xcode or the Terminal. The same can be done with Typinator as well by just adding it to your personal snippets.įinally, Typinator supports enabling different snippets on a per-application basis. The nice thing about the built-in OS X expansions is that they support special characters for instance typing (c) would expand to the unicode © character. You can even have it insert pictures as an expansion, such as writing in a document and typing +mysig and having it expand by inserting an image of your signature. You can use it for UNIX commands on the command line you can use it to insert the current date and time you can insert plain text or rich text. Below is an example of snippet abbreviations and their expansions in Typinator. ![]() For instance, typing, with the cursor positioned between the two HTML tags. It also comes with HTML snippets, which are expansions that are meant for writing HTML code. This includes auto-correction sets that will fix typos and common spelling mistakes (such as spelling “wierd” instead of “weird”). Unlike the small number of expansions that OS X comes with, Typinator has support for a number of expansion sets from when you first install it. The only thing you have to do is type, and it will perform the expansion for you. Instead, an automatic text tool like Typinator will do this for you, as you type, in nearly every application. As well, this will only work in Cocoa apps and, even then, not in every application. With Mac’s built-in Symbol and Text Substitution (see the Text tab in the Language & Text Preference Pane), it isn’t automatic you have to select Edit from the menu bar and then Substitutions, and then you can perform the substitutions from there. With Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), you can get this feature for free, but there are other alternatives that are much more flexible and powerful. If you type the same thing over again, or are prone to making the same spelling or text mistakes over and over, a text expansion and correction utility may be exactly what you need. Typinator allows you to save time typing and will also correct oft-misspelled words. Vincent Danen introduces his favorite tool for automating text in Mac OS X. To help with this, run through the level once or twice without worrying about speedrunning to help get familiar with it, and then restart the area and try. Of all of these, the hardest ones are by far the speedrun trophies and the Run, Move, Run! trophy, as they require players to have a solid understanding of each puzzle. Doing this should afford the player enough time to get through.Īnd with that, players should have attained all 23 trophies, as the final trophy is the platinum trophy and will be earned as soon as the other 22 are. Pull the lever in the room with the owl, run into the dome, pick up the smaller dome, and place it next to the tower. This can actually done as many times as needed, but players will need to restart the chapter if they fail. Finally, Run, Move, Run! requires players to enter the tower in chapter seven, The Exchange, on their first try. They'll quickly respawn, but they'll also attain the trophy. To unlock this trophy, players need to jump off the path and into the void. Into the Darkness is obtained during chapter five, also called The Spiral. Progress through the level as normal, but at the very end after obtaining the gear and jumping out into the larger world, head back to the light blue house. Next, players can get the Crew Creatures trophy in chapter three, titled The Wedge. They can then walk up the key and jump out of the level into the larger world. In the first chapter, titled The Maquette, players can get the Breakout trophy by upscaling the key and placing it on a wall. That leaves just four special trophies to hunt down at this point. A few of the special task trophies are easy enough as well and players probably already have some, including open a door, rotate an object, and resize an object to solve a puzzle. The times allotted for each trophy don't require any kind of glitches or skips, so players can get them all as long as they are fast. To make this easier, it is highly recommended to create a different save file at the start of each chapter, as Maquette has no chapter select feature.Īfter beating the game and receiving the eight completion trophies, play through each chapter of Maquette again to get the speedrun trophies. Finally, the other seven trophies require players to do special tasks within the various levels of the game. Beyond that, there are seven speedrun trophies, one for each of the game's chapters that requires players to beat them in a certain amount of time. Completion trophies are earned simply by progressing through the story, so players will knock out at least eight of these 23 trophies in their first playthrough. In total, there are 23 trophies to be found within Maquette, and they fall within one of three categories. RELATED: The True Beauty of Maquette is How it Affects Each Player Differently Beyond that, there's also a scaled up version of the world outside the walls of the dome world players are in, and this presumably goes on forever with infinite worlds getting infinitely smaller and larger. If players pick up a small object and place it inside the small dome in the center of the level, it will appear in the normal sized version of the level much bigger. Maquette's puzzles revolve around a recursive world, that is it continues to repeat based on other iterations of itself. ![]() What's more, some of the speedrun oriented trophies will require players to already have an understanding of how to solve all the puzzles. On a first playthrough of the game, players should focus on just figuring out how to solve the puzzles and enjoying the narrative, as it's short enough to where a second playthrough for trophy hunting makes sense. ![]() Maquette is a beautiful game with a unique premise and a surprisingly touching story, but it's also an opportunity to get a quick and easy platinum trophy to add to the to the trophy case. ![]() ![]() ![]() This can be done over the mobile network, so while you are away from home you can still browse the TV schedules on the train and set recordings on your box at home without being there in person.Īt the moment that's all the app will do. The previous box featured tiny dot button controls, the new box has larger clickable controls on the top, so if you find yourself wanting manual control when the remote goes walkies temporarily, it now at least feels possible, whereas before it was uncomfortable at best. ![]() That helps keep the size down and when this information is only a button press away, that probably won't be too much of a problem to you.īut even though this box is now much smaller, the physical controls are much better. The older Humax box had an LCD display on the front which is absent from the latest DTR-T2100. In the world of so many catch-up and set-top box solutions does it make sense? We've been living with the new Humax box upgrade to see whether it makes BT's YouView experience more compelling than before. We won't dwell too much on the nuts and bolts of what YouView offers, except where needed for clarity and completeness. However, the YouView platform is still the same, so whether you have the new box or old one it won't make a difference to what you can watch. In its latest generation form, the new YouView+ box from BT is again manufactured by Humax, but looks to change and improve the YouView offering. The first generation of box - the Humax DTR-T1000 - coped well enough, but had problems from the start: it was slow to respond, which detracted from the overall experience, and the fan was pretty noisy too. There's potential for confusion with the BT TV packages. That's something to mull over, as you'll be tied into an initial contract for the provider's overall package just like you would be with Sky, Virgin or any other provider. If you're not a BT customer, however, then the full BT package isn't necessarily going to save you heaps of cash compared to alternatives. If you're an existing BT YouView customer then the T2100 is certainly worth the upgrade (at the £35 offer) because the box and the experience is better all round. The important thing is to ensure you know what you're getting from the outset and make sure you don't end up paying for TV services you don't need. There's still plenty of confusion around what you might have to pay for, though, as well as the integration of BT TV services with wider YouView staples. It's slick and fast in operation and no slouch when it comes to firing up and delivering those on-demand services. The physical controls on top of the T2100 are welcome should you lose the new-and-improved remote control from time to time, and the box offers ample connections to appeal to new TV owners or those looking to use an old TV lacking a digital tuner. ![]() ![]() TeamViewer allows users to establish connections within a few seconds and control the other computer remotely.
